Niall came highly recommended by a friend who had travelled with him before, and after spending 10 days traveling through Ireland with him, it’s difficult to imagine having made this trip with anyone else.
Long before we ever met him, Niall had already invested countless hours in our trip. In the months leading up to Ireland, we had several ZOOM calls where he listened carefully to what each person hoped to experience, talked through possibilities with us, and then did an enormous amount of work on his own to create an itinerary around our family.
What he ultimately pulled off was really three trips in one: a golf trip for my brother, a chance to learn more about our family’s Irish ancestry, and an opportunity for all of us to experience Ireland - its history, landscapes, towns and people along the way.
Over 10 days, we stayed at four different hotels and travelled through Killarney, Dingle, Doolin and the Burren, with many stops, family-history destinations and four different golf courses woven in between. These places often pulled us in completely different directions, yet Niall somehow made it all feel like one cohesive trip.
There were days when he would drop my brother at a golf course and take the rest of us off to explore, then seamlessly bring everyone back together again. He personally called golf courses to help secure tee times we otherwise would not have been able to arrange and drove a lot of miles to make it all work. Nothing ever seemed like an inconvenience. Every morning, he greeted us at the van beaming, with his great sense of humour and ready for whatever the day might bring.
Before the trip, Niall also connected us with a wonderful genealogist who researched our family history and identified several areas connected to our relatives. He then worked those places into our itinerary.
One of our favourite experiences happened in Doolin. We knew the Burns side of our family had lived there but had no idea exactly where. Niall asked local people he knew if they remembered the Burns family, and through those conversations we were able to locate the property and remnants of the original family home. We even came home to Boston with a few pieces from it. It was something we never would have been able to find on our own and became a very special memory from the trip.
In between the golf, family history and everything else, Niall showed us so much of Ireland. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Irish history, has a wonderful sense of humour, and seems to know someone everywhere he goes. Some of our favourite stops and experiences were things we never would have known about or planned ourselves.
Over 10 days, four hotels, four golf courses and miles-and-miles of Ireland, Niall somehow gave us the golf trip, the ancestry trip and the Ireland trip, all at once.
We came home with so many great memories and an enormous appreciation for everything Niall did to make this trip possible. He is officially an honorary member of the Cosgrove family for life, and we recommend him to anyone looking for the trip of a lifetime to Ireland.
